Advertising- Sounds in adverts

Sounds in adverts

Diagetic sounds are the sounds you can see such as someone driving a car in an advert as you can see the sound happening where as non diagetic sounds are the sound you can hear, but can't see such as a voice over or music. Tempo is the speed of the music is played. For example, if the music is slow, then the tempo is slow, if the music is fast, it means the tempo is fast.

Car (Nissan):
  • Involves action
  • Fast tempo
  • Looks like a movie
  • Intimidating music at the beginning
In this advert there were diagetic sounds such as the zip line sound, the man taking the car keys, and the sound of the car being driven which we could hear and see. There were also non diagetic sounds such as the music in the background and voice over in the advert.

The tempo in this adverts was fast which suits it well because the advert was made to look like a spy/action movie. This advert is aimed at adult who like buying cars.

Make up:
  • Happy
  • Voice over
  • Slow tempo (music)
In this advert there were non diagetic sounds as you could hear a voice talking but you could not see the person in the advert. The tempo was slow but happy which shows that having a slow tempo in an advert does not mean it has to be sad.

Sofa(DFS):
  • Fast beat
  • Happy
  • Instruments
  • Audience is adults
There were no diagetic sounds used in this advert, but there were non diagetic sounds such as a voice over and instruments in the background which had a fast tempo. This advert is targeted to adults as they are the ones who buy sofas.

Chocolate(Cadburys):
  • Slow tempo
  • Happy
  • Beginning is calm
  • Drums (diegetic sound)
At the beginning of the advert the tempo was slow and calm but happy. There were drums playing in the advert which was a diagetic sound because you could see the gorilla play the drums in the video.This is aimed at anyone who likes chocolate and entertaining things.
